FANTA FLAVOR RESEARCH:
In total, their are 58 recorded Fanta flavors recorded. From The simple orange flavor which we most commonly see in the UK, to the more conspicuous flavors that only appear overseas such as the Cashew flavor.

During this project I will be creating a Fanta design and exploring certain design/marketing choices with exotic flavors.

Secondary research:

Only a small number of these are actually, officially sold in the UK, creating an import demand for the more exotic flavors. This large number of flavors currently being sold limits the amount of ideas I can have as I cannot create a design for an existing flavor.
ARTIST RESEARCH:

Milton Glassier creates vibrant art which I feel suites best with the fanta style.
I frequently use Olly Moss as an inspiration behind my work because I really like his style and I feel it would work really well with the bubbly, positive Fanta design.

I love Ira Marcks' cratoon graphic design as it is wacky, surreal and perfectly suits fanta's design

Brand Guidelines:
Fanta's brand guidelines are bubbly and family friendly. Their designs are clear and are easily recognizable when presented among other brands. These guidelines assist the designer with helping convey the product through their designs.
Fanta products are always accompanied by a colorful illustration of the fruit represented in the logo. This will be key in my design as I wish to create a good illustration of my chosen flavor.

These flavors contain the bubbly design while also containing hints of design based on the flavors cultural roots as well as silhouettes of the cultures architecture.
I plan to create a mascot for my flavors, like these adverts.
These characters will be designed as liquid droplets and will be colored in accordance to the flavor.

Primary Research:
All designs follow a similar set of guidelines, excluding the limited edition bottle, which is without an illustration of its fruit flavor below the brand name. We can also see the differences in design between an original flavor, a limited edition flavor and a zero added sugar flavor as well as the slight changes in design.
ADVERT ANALYSIS:

Every Christmas, Coca-Cola advertise their product through the Christmas lorries that travel around the country. This mass advertisement is also continued through our cultural perception of Father Christmas/Santa, which was turned Red by Coca-Cola. He was originally green. This has also
created a national Mandela effect, nobody
remembers when he was green because
the change happened when their was a lack
of television but a plethora of adverts.
Fanta advertise through interesting, aesthetically pleasing posters. Sometimes they advertise through social media towards the younger generation but their graphic design posters are the most iconic.

BRAND COMPETITORS:
Primary Brand competitors to Fanta are companies like Tango, Tropicana, Orangina etc.

All of these competitors are in the fruit based soft drink market, but none operate on the same scale of Fanta itself. This is due to Fanta being owned by Coca-Cola, which gives it a much larger net-worth than the other brands due to its parent company.
Tropicana and Orangina both have simple packaging but Tango has quite 'Explosive' packaging which is effective in catching the eye.
None of Fanta's competitors have anywhere near as many flavors as Fanta itself. Even Coca-Cola only have around half the flavors as Fanta.

Tango have launched 'chilled' variations of their drink in the past as a promotional event. This includes quotes on the can such as 'Chilled Tango made my stones shrink'. These jokes are most likely used to reach out onto social media, as some might share the joke, this is great as its basically free advertising as the buyer does the work for you.
Fanta do own a frozen drink brand but it is only sold in New Zealand so it is not as popular as the 'Tango Ice Blast' brand. Although it is sold by McDonald's so it does have more support than Fanta's 'ice blast' brand, which is only sold at cinemas.
MOOD BOARD:
A mood board is a board of images, texts and other various materials used to help designers visualize concepts and ideas that help with their work/projects.
These can come extremely useful as they help finalize ideas and complete certain pieces of work that the designers may be struggling on.

Also, Fanta has a much larger influence across the globe as a brand than any of its competitors. With Tango and Tropicana only being primarily sold in the UK.
Fanta is largely enjoyed in other countries such as Japan, Thailand, China and Brazil. These countries develop much stranger flavors in order to match their cultural tastes, such as Mushroom, Raisin, Cashew and other odd varieties.
However, Tango do offer a popular 'Ice Blast' range which are sold at most cinemas, this is a kind of item that Fanta could possibly reach out to in the future.

Tango have also created a range of orange flavored sweets in order to reach out to a new market. They are also sold as 'eye-line' goods as they are usually sold on the counter to catch the attention of somebody not looking specifically for the product.
FLAVOR IDEAS:

I have written numerous ideas including cocktail mixing syrup, anniversary flavors and seasonal flavors. Next year, it is Fanta's 80th anniversary so an 80th anniversary design for a can is a good idea.
The 3 flavors I have chosen to continue are:
-
Candy Apple (Chocolate or Toffee) possibly a smoothie/Milkshake? This idea is interesting as it would be a mix of fruit and something which would not usually be associated with fruit. Red and Green.
-
Strawberries and Cream. This flavor would be appealing as it as a traditional British dessert, this may be popular within older generations as it is an old traditional dessert. Red and White.
-
Candy Floss (80th anniversary flavor) This flavor could suit the celebrational theme of an 80th anniversary. Pink. The can/ bottle will have confetti on.
FINAL FLAVOR IDEA:

I have decided to follow with my Strawberries and cream idea as I feel it works best my work. It helps that the flavor suits to a limited edition flavor as it will be Fanta's 80th anniversary next year. Also, the flavor is a British classic, which will help appeal to audiences further.
More people voted for Candy Apple, but I would prefer to create the Strawberry and Cream due to its cultural significance and because it makes more sense to make as a flavor.
I feel the flavor might not be so heavily desired by my target audience, but instead I will focus on designing my packaging in such a way to catch the eye of customers, this means I will have to design it to stand out among other drinks.
I will also focus on Fanta's 80th anniversary which will be next year, this gives me a reason to make the flavor limited edition.

Color CMYK:

I have created a Mood Board on how I feel my variation of Fanta should be. I included the CMYK codes for the colors I will be using as well as an inspiration towards the mascot I have been creating. I included an image of confetti as well as an 80th anniversary badge which I may include in my design to commemorate the 80th birthday for Fanta.
The ducks represent how I want to create the bottle design to stand out as best as possible. And the women drinking will be the reactions of those lucky enough to lay eyes on my design.
I tried to recreate what might be a loosely based version of my final outcome simply by changing the hue. I might primarily use the pink, replicating the strawberries mixed with the cream as it is a design and color left mostly unused by Fanta themselves, therefore creating a unique design.

There is already a Fanta strawberry flavor which is in limited supply, but the can is a vibrant red, different to my design.

I copied down the measurements for the wrapper design and noted down the sizes for each area, this has given me an idea of the amount of space I have to work with.
Here, I created a short, brief design for my wrapper design, including my final chosen flavor, strawberries and cream. I included areas to put all required information, including space for the QR code, Nutritional info and GDA etc.
These 3 designs are improvements on the wrapper design I created in my note book. Each design has a different aspect which makes it unique, therefore stand out visibly from all of the other Fanta wrappers, while still using the Fanta 2019 logo (We have permission for usage).
I have several key ideas that I am really happy with. One of which is a strawberry seeded background covering the entire wrapper design, as seen on the middle sketch.

Color of Strawberry Leaf

Color of Cream

I have created two color variations of my design, including the original logo provided to us bu Coca-Cola and the illustrations of cream covered strawberries next to the flavor text I created. I prefer the first logo, as the background circle color will help the logo stand out in front of the rest of the wrapper, of which I plan to be red and seeded with strawberry seeds.

This variation is slightly different, as it removes the fruit from the bottom right corner and instead, has a seeded texture in the background, which gives it the effect of a strawberry. I like this design as it is simple, yet effective. I think it would work well as it would catch the eye of many possibly buyers. However, I would not be able to make the rest of the wrapper have the same seeded effect, as it would negate the background of the title.

This is an improved upon version of the one above, as, in essence, it uses the same design but instead of just the simple circle background I have replaced it with a large strawberry.
However I think there is too much empty space in terms of the blue shadow cast by the title.
REVIEWED BY CLASS:
To fill the empty space I was given a few tips as to fix the issue, I could recreate the cream-dipped strawberry in my first designs, but on a larger scale with the background strawberry in this piece.

These are the improvements I have made to the version above. I listened to some class feedback and I enlarged the title so it is easier for consumers to read from a distance, this has also removed the surplus of space under the Fanta Title.
To include the cream element of the flavor onto the title I created the strawberry to look as if it has been dipped in cream, just like the smaller strawberries in my original designs.
REVIEWED BY CLASS:
To improve, I was recommended to make the cream look more like cream and to add more detail to the leaves of the strawberry, how ever, the improvements I have made prior have vastly improved the design.
FANTA LOGO HISTORY:

This much improved version includes a color change to the cream to make it look more realistic, this has also given me more color options for the wrapper. Also, the text has been changed to be more logo friendly, the 'And' has been changed to the symbol version to increase size and help the text fit into the green box.
I have given the leaves more dark green patches, to give it more effect and to make it look less simplistic. I( also adjusted the size of the green text box to fit the text better.
This is a GDA which I created through Adobe Illustrator for my packaging. I used the pen tool to create the general shape and the curve and I used pathfinder to separate the percentage side to color it in accordance to the height of percentage.
I feel this came out really well and is as close to professional standard as possible.
I did have difficulty finding the Pathfinder too, but I looked back on tutorials I worked on for the Adobe suite and reminded myself how to do it.

I think that the Fanta logo development is extremely interesting as it started as a Serif, hand drawn design that is slightly too serious and, other the time span of 76 years, has turned into an appealing design.
If I were to order the logo's from worst to best, I would say that the logos from 1940 to 2004 are all poorly designed as they are not appealing to the eyes of a consumer.
However, I think that the 2010 design is by far the best design, as it is well put together and bubbly, which appeals to the eye of the consumer. It is also a good improvement from the 2008 design.
In my wrapper design, I need to include content like; the GDA, nutritional information, logo, bar code, contact info, ingredients and the strawberry wrapper design.
GDA/RI are important in modern society as they help health conscious people understand the contents of what they are drinking and help keep people aware of a beverages contents.
TARGET SETTING:

-
I aim to complete 5 different logo's by the end of the week to create some variety in my work.
-
I aim to complete a third wrapper design by the end of the week to achieve a unique design brief for my logo.
-
I aim to complete other parts of my wrapper designs including nutritional/contact info by the end of the week.
I don't like the latest design compared to 2010 due to it seeming too square, using a strange typography, very similar to the 1972 logo.
To improve the existing logo, I think Fanta should revert the typography to the rounded, bubbly design, but also keep the blue drop-shadow, leaf and orange background.
Beginning Design Planning:

My first variant is a simple design for the wrapper but complex in the logo, however, it is missing a cream illustration. This is because I wanted this logo to look simple and to the point.

This version is an edit of the first, with the design of the wrapper and logo background flipped. I also added two strawberries into the logo design as well as cream on one of the strawberries.

For this version I took the smaller strawberry design from the second wrapper and enlarged it as well as adding cream to the bottom of the strawberry logo.

This variation is an improvement of the first, adding cream to the logo to make the flavor more relevant. It is more eye catching than the first design due to the extra illustration.

My fifth and final variation has a unique wrapper design which includes the strawberries pulled from the logo. This wrapper has a higher eye-catching factor but is more complex and will be confusing to read.
Development:

This developed variation contains an RI, bar code, ingredients, contact details, and other miscellaneous markings on the wrapper. This is my favorite wrapper design as the logo is eye catching and the design is unique whilst also following the brand guidelines.

This version is an improved version of the first variant made at the beginning of design planning. I am happy with the outcome and I like the placement of the cream, although feedback has told me that the design isn't as strong as the one above.

This is an edit of the first development, I like this design as it looks as if it has been dropped onto cream, instead of it looking as if it has been dipped. I feel this design is better than the original, however I don't think it is as effective at catching the eye. This design has also had its wrapper improves, making the QR code smaller and also removing the illustrations away from the right sides edge.

This is the document setup for my wrapper design, this includes the precise sizes, number of pages I used and also the bleed, which helps improve prints and stops white edges from showing on a print.

I placed a vote on my personal Instagram account and found that the majority of people who saw the post preferred the logo with the large strawberry in the background. I am happy with this outcome because it is the logo which took the most development and work to make it look well done. It is also my favorite logo development.
This development is an improvement upon both logo and wrapper designs. I acquired feedback, saying the logo is good, however the wrapper was lacking and to put it bluntly, boring. So I created a unique and varied background design which complemented the logo and the wrapper whilst also managing to catch the eye. Also, both the QR code and the Barcode are updated to, when scanned, send the scanner to this website.
The Importance of Design Prototyping:
Design prototyping and development is important because it helps the creator visualize/create their final idea or project. It is a simple process of elimination in which you remove and add design aspects you like while documenting your decisions. This ultimately allows you to review your design and to create a final piece composed of all of your best work, creating a more mature/professional piece of work.

A design thinking process assists designers with planning and putting together their work. These stages each are dyer in the design process, as they create the best outcomes.
Final Export Settings:

David Terrar. (February 19 2018 ). What is design thinking?. Available: https://www.enterpriseirregulars.com/125085/what-is-design-thinking/. Last accessed 26/11/2019.

On this snip, I have chosen my design, put it on the highest quality settings and turned the file into a PDF.
On the next snip, I have chosen to reveal the crop and bleed marks, the exact measurements can be seen below as 3 mm.

The two lines closest to the wrapper in the corners are the crop marks, as the furthest two lines are the bleed marks.
Self Criticisms:

I really like the current final design of my wrapper. I am happy with the fruit illustrations, as well as my illustrations of the technical aspects of my wrapper, such as the RI and GDA etc. However, I do feel these aspects stand out too much on the wrapper, but it should stand out as it is important information. I could fix this by making the white on the RI slightly transparent, as I have with the other text.
I like the consistency I created between the designs of the GDA and RI as the similarity in designs complement each other. I also think that I didn't do a good enough job at making the text stand out, as the white background box is still too opaque.
FINAL LABEL:

I am happy with this outcome, as it addresses some issues of the wrapper I wasn't originally aware of. Such as the color of the background being too warm, and the '250ml' above the GDA not being centered properly.
PEER REVIEW:
Not many changes were requested to be made to my current design. However, I was asked to make the white, opaque boxes behind some of the text rounded, as the sharp edges are too serious and the rounded edges would suit much better to the Fanta style.
The outcome is great, not only does the design suit the wrapper, but I feel it will also look really good on the bottle and I am excited to see the printed outcome.

Predicted Final Product:
Peer Feedback:
What went well:
-
You have included lots of photos in your work to show secondary research
-
You have made sure to annotate everything in detail
-
You have presented your work clearly showing all of your developments
-
You’ve done your own primary research for better results
-
All of your designs are at a high standard with lots of good annotations
Even better if:
-
You could explain more about why you didn’t go for the Candy floss flavour and why the one you chose is a better option
-
You could say what type of impression you want your logo/label to have on people
-
You could look at the Fanta brand guideline for ideas about how you want your logo to be used and what the focus/personality of it is
Why is reviewing others work important when designing?
Reviewing others work is important to help encourage developments to further improve the piece of work and create the final outcome.
Reflection:
I fully agree with the peer feedback. I realize now that I need go in depth with an explanation towards Fanta's brand guidelines. Including an explanation on why I ditched the other flavour ideas.

I am happy with the outcomes of this simple mock-up. It has a realistic look and fits neatly within the design guidelines as my bottle wrapper designs.

I will have to adjust the length of one side, as the wrapper seems to be too long and overlaps too far over the glue mark.

Both issues, Fixed!

This print was way too large, probably being able to fit on a large bottle. I fixed this easily as it was an issue with the printer settings.
We can see, by these comparisons, that the GDA and Barcode are too close to the logo. I will find a way to compress it.

I moved the GDA and the Barcode so they do not interfere with the logo on the wrapper.

Updated/Improved Can Mockup:
I am happy with the super realistic outcome and I like how the wrapper back ground looks wrapped around the can.
This variant has completely removed the QR code to make space for the logo, further improving the issue shown above, at the loss of an area of design. I will place this on a separate bottle from the current one so I have two versions to showcase.

This iteration has moved the Barcode to the far right of the wrapper. This has given the logo more room and also has moved a non-essential illustration out of the way, as people will not be looking at the Barcode.
AFTER EFFECTS:
After effects is used for editing images/videos and turning them into good quality videos; animations, clips and movies. This application is used by professionals all over the industry. From Hollywood to YouTube, this app is widely accepted and used.

PRODUCT PHOTOGRAPHY:
For this part of my research, I have photographed several images of Strawberries and Whipped cream in order to replicate the real product photography process used in the real industry.
EVALUATIONS:

At the start of this project, I struggled with choosing a flavor. I didn't know what to do, with the vast amount of flavors already existing in mind, I had no clue what to do. However I managed to figure out 3 flavors to choose from. Strawberries and Cream, Candy Apple and Candy Floss. I ditched the two
Candy ideas as I thought they were too generic, I liked the choice of Strawberries and Cream as my final choice as it felt unique, realistic and also patriotic as it is a traditional British Flavor.
I planned to solve this problem through an Instagram poll and help from my class mates. However, my poll went against the flavor I was routing for. I wanted my design to make sense and I felt the Candy flavor was too generic too continue so I carried on developing my Strawberry and Cream idea.
My most effective research source is probably my online secondary research and the polls I put on Instagram for my primary research. These sources helped me further develop and expand my idea and help it grow into a full outcome.
During this project, I learnt how to use both Adobe InDesign and Illustrator. Before this project I was very confused with both apps as they worked nothing like Photoshop, However I quickly learnt how to use the programs which I both used to develop my final wrapper design.
From this project, I am most proud of the amount of development it took for me to finalize my design. It took a considerable amount of work to reach that final outcome and I am happy with the way the design has turned out. I created, in whole, 7 separate wrapper design which I put through polls to help me find my final design idea. I believe the final outcome is one of my optimal pieces of work and is currently the best work I can create.
If I were to do this project again, I would put more thought into my flavor ideas. I could have taken advantage of the time of year and created a Christmas themed flavor like Cinnamon or Mince Pie flavor, I missed out on these ideas.
In the next project, I would like to develop my video editing skills further, as I currently have very limited knowledge of the subject and I have only just started using it.
In this project, my strengths have been the speed of which I have developed ideas and the quality of which they have become. Even before certain people in my class has began working on their wrapper design, I had already made 4. I am incredibly proud of this and I believe the outcome is industry standard.
My past project (Fundamentals of Design) helped prepare for this project in refining my photo/image editing skills across 3 separate applications. I learnt how to use Illustrator just before I started this project so I was quick to adapt to the work I had to complete.
Overall, I have fully enjoyed this project and I am happy with the current position I am in. I believe this project has helped me develop some key skills in editing which will surely help with future projects or even possibly, work. The outcome is almost exactly as I imagined it to be and I think it is of industry standard.
