JAMES BOND PROJECT:
For this project we are tasked to create a poster for the upcoming film, 'No Time To Die'. This will be great practice for rapidly creating work as we only have a week to complete this project (6/01/2020) - (13/1/2020).
I plan to develop 2 different pieces, one of which will be a collage styled poster celebrating all past Daniel Craig Bond films. This will be in the same style as my 'DREDD' poster which I showcased in the Fundamentals of Design tab.
For the second piece, I will create a similar poster as to the first, however it will feature typography primarily.

Mood Board supplied by Filmmakers:
Research:
I have sourced numerous images/cuts from the film which I will put into the collage; this includes major villains like Silva, various vehicles such as the Aston Martin and also the talented female characters which are featured during the Bond series.

I have sketched my ideas on how im going to create this poster, this shows how I want to present the poster, being similar to older Bond posters but celebrating all the Daniel Craig films in total.

I am really fond with this poster, as it creates an air of mystery around Daniel Craig's Bond portrayal. This is assisted by the fact that this is only his second film in the franchise, so his character is not yet established.

This variation of my design was my original idea, however it is not the one I chose to fully develop. I liked the aspect of it but I think it is too similar to my 'DREDD' poster design.
Also I don't think it is an original idea as it uses elements from a poster which already exists, as seen above.

Development/Practice:
I took a bold text, which fits the serious Bond typography (Serif) and chose a keyword from the franchise.

I used the clipping mask tool to place the images inside of the text. I then used the rubber tool with the feather effect and removed the background.

For this variation of the poster, I took the '007' logo and widened it slightly so more images can be fit inside of the text.

I began designing the final variation on Illustrator, but I found it too difficult to edit the piece the way I wanted too. I found that it was easier to edit on Photoshop as it had all the tools I needed working in the right way.
I used the clipping mask tool to fit the images inside of the text, however, before doing this I had to tenuously remove the background of each image I sourced which took a large amount of time and I also had to figure out the app best to use for this (Photoshop).
Final Poster:

This is my final variation of the design. I like the turnout and think it is well put together. I ended up struggling to find images/objects relevant to the Daniel Craig films however I managed to effectively piece together all of the images like a puzzle. In conclusion, I am happy with this outcome.

Topics I would like to cover:
-
I would like to create a Music magazine, as I have done in the past for my GCSE, so for this, I have experience. I also feel, with my new skills, this would be a good opportunity to compare to an older piece of work and show the progress I have made.
-
I am fond of the idea of a car orientated magazine. With this I can express a love for vehicles as well as create an independent/unique style which I have not yet covered.
-
My final idea is one I think is slightly over-saturated, I like the idea of a gaming magazine, when I was younger I would collect the official Xbox mags (I still have around 20 of them) so this would help me with guidelines to use for the design of the mag.
Examples:

Magazine Research:
I plan to gather primary and secondary research on famous celebrities vehicles which influenced pop culture such as Eazy-E's 64' Impala or James Dean's cursed Porsche.
Rolling Stone is a great example of a high quality music magazine, celebrating the art of music while also making accurate critiques without alienating certain genres from the magazine. They are popular for focusing on only the best of the best of music, giving their readers exclusive coverage that no other magazine provides.
Popular mechanics is a perfect example for a classic, memorable vehicular magazine. With this issue, you can see a stylish coverage of the iconic 'Ford Versus Ferrari' grudge match between the two car manufacturers. This coverage has cemented this magazine in history and has aslo been used as the title for the film starring Christian Bale and Matt Damon 'Ford vs Ferrari'.

The Official Xbox magazine is one of the entertainment genres hallmark mags. Whilst it is held down by its narrow sited coverage of just one console (the Xbox) it has also been running successfully for a long time while also giving grade A, exclusive interviews and insight on the most popular video games of all time.
Final Magazine Idea:
My final magazine idea is for a car centered magazine which explores the culture behind car trends such as the Low-rider craze in Los Angeles or the street racing scene is Tokyo. This could also explore the music trends which follow those cars, also showcasing popular figures in the car culture as well as their modified vehicles.
Feedback Gathering:
For gathering feedback on this project I will use the voting features on Instagram as I have done on my prior projects. I will also try and take part in a focus group, also possibly creating surveys for people to take part in online.

Stacey King Gordon (2001). Magazine Design That Works. London: Rockport. p1-p159.
As part of my primary research, I studied the book 'Magazine design that work' to look for prior designs which attracted readers the most. I plan to create an effective front cover which will attract the attention of anyone passing by, not just auto-mechanical fans.

In my magazine I plan to showcase various celebrities and their beloved vehicles, as well as uncovering the culture behind various automotive styles such as the Low-rider and the iconic hydraulics or the Japanese street racing street scene and the creation of the Midnight Club.
Eazy-E is a monolithic figure within the Rap/Hip-hop industry and is widely considered to be the Grandfather of Rap. In multiple tracks he is known to rap about his staple car which is is 1964 Chevrolet Impala.

In this image, we see the famous actor James Dean with his Porsche 550 Spyder 'Little Bastard'.
He is known for his films 'Rebel without a cause' and 'Giant'. He is also known in the car industry for his Porsche which one day he crashed and was subsequently killed by it. The Porsche was remodeled and past around multiple people, each time crashing or mysteriously being destroyed. Current location of the car is unknown, however that is probably a good thing.
Another topic I would like to cover is the Midnight Club, an illegal Japanese street racing gang which valued respect, caution while racing and also the upper class, as most of the members were notably rich. This gang also influenced the popular racing game franchise of the same name. They disbanded in 1999 after a horrific crash which hospitalized 6 innocent motorists. This crash wasn't caused by reckless driving however, instead a motorcycle gang influenced by western motorcycle culture instigated the crash by messing with the drivers.

'As the racers tore down the expressway, the Bōsōzoku were waiting for them. Forcing some of the members into a high-traffic zone, the interference of one of the Bōsōzoku bikers culminated in a huge chain-reaction collision which claimed the lives of two of the bikers and put two Midnight Club drivers and six civilians in hospital.
Club policy dictated that endangering innocent drivers was the ultimate offence, and so the gang permanently disbanded with immediate effect. Although the Midnight Club had been a significant source of stress for Tokyo authorities for many years, members were highly regarded for their strong sense of morality and honour post-disaster.'

Page Plan: 12 pages/6 double page spreads.
-
Street racing in Tokyo.
-
Low-riders in Los Angeles.
-
'Lunch Money' and disability within racing.
-
Eazy-E and James Dean's famous cars.
-
The Hoonigans and car modification culture.
-
The Midnight Club.
On these pages, I plan to include images, references, facts on the subjects and also information relating to the subjects. I plan to create each double page spread unique, following the style of the cultures within the double page spread itself.
Target Audience:
For my magazine, I aim to target any magazine reader as I would like my magazine to be interesting and informative. I plan to inform my readers of disability within racing as a topical issue and make light on famous racers such as 'Lunch Money' who built his own car and races it professionally.

Magazine Codes and Conventions:
Codes and Conventions are terms for all of the contents of a magazine such as; strapline, to sell the magazines image, or the masthead, which always dominates the front page of the magazine.
Creatives use them because they give a clear set of rules for how to create a good/effective magazine design or layout.
For this project, the programs I will mostly be using are Illustrator and InDesign. These will help me create a good front cover and effective double page spreads.
Possible Magazine Titles:
-
Revso.
-
Gearup.
-
Nextgear.
-
Shift.
-
Drive.
-
The Daily Driver.
-
Gran Turismo.
-
Turismo.
I have decided to settle with the magazine title, 'Turismo', as it has a direct historical connection to cars and I feel it is a fitting title for a vehicle magazine.
Text Practice:
During this lesson, we practiced creating text on an InDesign document, whilst also removing any errors such as widowed/orphaned words and also rags.
I have planned a simple layout for how I want to design my double page spreads. I want both pages to incorporate the primary theme of the magazine, however each double page spread will be completely different as they explore different themes/cultures within the racing world. Also, each double page spread will only incorporate 1 theme, the only 'mixed' double page spread is the one on celebrity vehicles, showcasing Eazy-E and James Dean.
Focus Group Audio Questions and Fixes:
What audio problems could you come across in a focus group?
-
Noise in another class. To tackle this issue one could move to a quieter area of the college, or possibly ask the class/teacher to politely keep the noise at a minimum.
-
Poor audio quality/range on recording device. To fix this issue, you could simply change recording devices or maybe even request for a microphone from the media room to record the audio.
-
Disruptive members in focus group. A simple fix for this issue is to make sure people taking part are speaking clearly when it is their turn to speak and for any disruptive members to return to class.
When organizing a focus group, to avoid these issues entirely you could; position yourself in a quieter area, make sure the quality on the recording device is of standard, make sure to remind the speakers to keep a loud and intelligable voice when speaking and also for non-readers to keep silent during the focus group.

What is a master page?
A Master Page is a nonprinting page that you can use as the template for the rest of the pages in your document. Master pages can contain text and graphic elements that will appear on all pages of a publication.

Development:
This video showcases the creation of the typography I have used on my front cover. I am happy with the way my magazine has turned out and I feel it is effective at catching the eye of the reader.

I am very happy with the final result of my title development. I feel it looks very authentic and I am happy with the outcome of my custom text. I feel the gear stick o works really well and the creative title will appeal towards car fans. I did struggle with the creation of the 'gear o' but I feel the finished product looks professionally made, I will go as far as to say it is one of the most effective logo/titles I have made or come across.
Weekly Objectives:
The 3 things I plan to complete/start by the end of this week are my front cover, which only needs polishing, my first and possibly second double page spread and finally the rest of my photo gathering.
Weekly Objectives Achieved:
I managed to complete my weekly objective, as well as finishing more work then I aimed for. I planned to complete up to 2 double page spreads, however, I managed to complete 4 in the time I gave myself.
Double page spread 1:

Double page spread 2:

Double page spread 3:

Double page spread 4:

Double page spread 5:

Double page spread 6:

My first double page spread I have created, I am very happy with the outcome and I feel it is effective in gaining the attention of the reader in its use of vibrant colors and images. I also made sure it included an abundance of text to help balance out the image:text ratio so the development doesn't seem lazy. I researched the history of underground street racing for this segment and then pieced together a few paragraphs to explain what the tradition is and the history of street racing.
For this double page spread, I used a similar format as the page above, however it is based on a completely different topic. I feel this page has the most interesting story, as it outlines the generation of an entire culture, which many don't understand to have a heavy emphasis around cars. I did plenty of research for this page, as I needed to get everything 100% correct as I don't want to suffer cultural appropriation on the double page spread. I feel the development finished very well and i'm happy with the outcome.
This spread covered disability within racing, a little covered topic which I feel more need to know about. The pages are largely text orientated because it is a main article. I covered the story on an article online and placed the link to said article at the bottom of the page for a Harvard Reference. I enjoyed how the story pieced together and I feel that the article is very interesting and can gain a lot of attention because it is a little covered topic in racing and in the media as a whole.
For this spread, I illustrated an image of both Eazy-E and James Dean to create a sort of stenciled, black and white style which I feel is very effective. This page covers both of the legends stories very well, I also added a small feature which assisted me with adding more text to the page, which is the sidebar. It allowed me to go into more depth with the stories and also helped me place more images onto the page, which show the vehicles of the celebrities.
I am comfortable with the outcome of this page. I covered the story of the Mid-Night Club in great detail whilst still leaving room for images of the gang below. I included the Japanese typography at the top of the page which translates to 'Wangan', which is another name for the gang 'Wangan Midnight'.
Although this spread was created last, it will be the first featured pages in the magazine as it includes an advertisement, which uses an ad I created for a partners brand project, as well the the contents page. The advert is on the left because that page will be different to the rest as it will not be paper, instead card because it is the rear of the front cover. The contents page simply and clearly explains each page, separate from the double page spreads.

Adobe Premier Pro Practice:
Potential audio problems:
During the creation of this video, I could have encountered multiple audio issues. One of which (which occurred for me) is the audio not uploading fully, to fix this issue I simply reset the application and re-uploaded the audio. Another issue could be the audio being a different length as the video, I fixed this by cutting the unused audio then slowly fading it out.
This video outlines the skills I have learn't as well as my creative process whilst creating the video above. I feel the creation of the video was much simpler than the application is rumored to be online and I am happy with the outcome.
Magazine Evaluation:
During this project, I have refined my skills on Indesign, I haven't properly used the app until this project so i'm happy with the outcome of the magazine in the end. I have also learn't how to use Adobe Premier Pro, which is a big step up as I have no experience with editing videos, however I managed to quickly adapt to the app and create a video with cuts, modified speed and added audio/music.
I encountered one audio problem during this project, The music, which was royalty free, was longer than the video itself, so to make the end of the video seamless I edited the music so at the end it gets quieter and then fades out. I also explored other issues which I could have come across, such as the audio not uploading to the clip properly.
In comparison to previous projects, I have found this to be relatively easy and quite fun. I have enjoyed the work I have been tasked with and I didn't find it too difficult as I have done a similar project for my GCSE. However I was only tasked with making one double page spread for my GCSE, so this was a large step up in work load for me, but it wasn't too hard.
For this project, my magazine idea was originally to create a music themed magazine, however I wanted to change the idea because I have already worked on this for my GCSE, I feel a change in work would be better as it shows I can adapt to different themes. My target audience for this project were car fans/enthusiasts, but I also wanted to attract other audiences, I tried to make my front cover stand out as much as possible. For this I illustrated an image of a modified car in a vibrant purple color.
I have designed my magazine to attract my target audience by including topics they will be interested in. I explored disability within racing, which is a rarely covered topic, as well as a segment on famous celebrities vehicles from the past. This could help me attract other audiences.
If this magazine were sold in a shop, I would like it to be an eye-line good in a corner shop or Tesco's, as these places have the most customers, and making it an eye-line good will increase the amount of people who potentially see the magazine. I would not like it to be sold in a WHSmiths or other such shops as they do not generate as many customers.
I would advertise this magazine to my target audience by making the front covers stand out as much as possible to increase the likely-hood of them being seen among other magazines in the store.
In this project, my strengths were designing key aspects of the magazine on Illustrator and also creating the layout for the magazine on Indesign. I enjoyed doing this because I am somewhat familiar with it as I did similar work in school.
During this project I feel the areas I need to develop are my Indesign skills as well as my Premier Pro skills. I have never used Premier Pro in the past so I found it interesting to use as it wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be. I enjoyed making the video and am excited to work on the app further in the future.
I plan to improve these areas through future work which will give me good enough practice for future use of the app. If I am ever stuck with the app, however, I can consult with my friend Alfie, who is well versed with the Premier Pro editing tools as seen on my YouTube channel.
The most beneficial part of this project was working with Adobe Premier Pro, as it is a skill I have not yet developed very well. I enjoyed learning how to edit videos on the app as it was an experience I have not seen before, I also enjoyed creating the magazine as it is something I have done before and I feel the outcome is very close to professional work.

Print Issue:
I have come upon an issue while printing, I haven't gone up in multiples of 4 for my pages, so it has printed two extra pages on the end. I will fix this by removing the lowrider double page spread, as I am not fond with its design anyway.
Print Issue Fix:
To fix the issue I faced whilst printing my magazine, I removed the Low-rider double page spread to give the magazine the correct amount of pages. Here is a link to an interactive version of my magazine: http://online.fliphtml5.com/vuzjr/xtde/

Focus Group:
This focus group explains the development of my magazine and the design process I decided to take. It also shows others opinions of my magazine design, so that in the future I understand design conventions that others like so I can use them again. During this focus group we came across no audio issues but we made sure to stay close to the camera so our voices stay clear.
